Overcome: Stories of Women Who Grew up in the Child Welfare System, book launch

September 29, 2022 —

On Thursday, Oct. 6, Chancellor Anne Mahon’s third book will be released at a special event in Winnipeg, with all of the author’s proceeds going to Voices, a Winnipeg organization supporting youth in care and those transitioning to adulthood.

And on Monday, Oct. 24. the UM will host a community book launch event at the William Norrie Centre, 485 Selkirk (UM Inner City Social Work Program) from 12-1 p.m.

Mahon is an oral history writer interested in people, their stories, and making meaningful connections, and her latest book, Overcome: Stories of Women Who Grew up in the Child Welfare System (Great Plains Publications), offers a compelling collection of stories of 10 women who journey from victims of the child welfare system to survivors, and beyond. Despite facing endless challenges, oppression, and trauma these women discover their power through creativity, advocacy, cultural exploration, self-awareness, education, motherhood, and extreme empathy. These deeply personal stories are generously shared and powerfully told.

The launch event will include excerpts from book participants, followed by an audience Q and A session and a book signing.
