Turning illness into art: PhD student uses art to transform chronic care

Most people wouldn’t think of art to address chronic illness. But for Jen Sebring, a PhD candidate at the College of Community and Global Health (CCGH) in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, art became a powerful and thought-provoking tool to better understand and support those with chronic health conditions and disabilities.

CBC: Manitoba’s health system not ready for changes promised in throne speech: nurses union

November 19, 2025 — 
Dr. Sonia Udod, associate professor of nursing at the University of Manitoba, agreed there’s "good and bad" in the announcement. "Who will take care of the patients when there are no nurses to take over?" Udod said. "I'm not sure how that’s going to happen."

Classic 107: Manitoba doctor leads national shift toward restorative practices in health care

A Manitoban physician is leading the way across Canada in working towards getting everyone proper medical care, including those who have been discriminated against in the past.  On top of being a physician, Dr. Jayson Stoffman (director, PGME academic curriculum; chair, PGME academic curriculum committee) is the program director for the pediatric residency program at the University of Manitoba.

Winnipeg Free Press: U of M chemist earns award for work on new drug candidate for treating Lou Gehrig’s disease

A University of Manitoba PhD candidate with a dramatic life story has been awarded the Mitacs Innovation Award for co-inventing an aspiring new drug candidate for treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, announced Monday.
