Matthew Stewart: From Russia with Love
Third-year Entrepreneurship major Matthew Stewart traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia in April 2013 as part of the U of M delegation to the 8th annual G20 Youth Forum. He joined over 1,500 students, academics, young leaders, business people and politicians from around the world to explore global problems and potential solutions.
“Students in developing countries lack so many opportunities we take for granted,” he explains, “from lack of technology to the basics, like clean running water and medicine. I want to connect Canadian stu dents with ways they can make a difference in those countries – by building awareness, fundraising, and putting them in touch with resources and opportunities.”
Stewart is no stranger to making a difference. A Leader of Tomorrow scholarship recipient, he raised over $180,000 to build rainwater harvesting tanks in Tanzania – while still a high school student.
He’s also coordinator of the U of M’s World WISE Resource Centre, a student-run organization that connects university students with international development projects.
