Mandatory training for employees will make UM more accessible for all

Complete your Accessibility Training (Information and Communication Standard) by May 1

March 18, 2024 —

A new mandatory accessibility training course has been added to UM Learn. All UM employees must complete the simple 30-minute course by May 1.

The university has been undertaking a project to fulfill the legislative requirements of Manitoba’s Accessible Information and Communication Standard requirements (under the Accessibility for Manitobans Act), coming into effect May 1.

Under the AMAIC standard, organizations must consider the ways in which Manitobans interact with or access information. They must develop measures, policies, and practices that provide barrier-free information and communication — including all-employee training on the standard and its requirements.

FAQs

Is the all-employee training for the Information and Communication Standard mandatory? Is there a deadline to complete the training?

Yes. ALL University employees must be trained in the Accessible and Information Communication Standard by May 1, 2024.

Please note: This training is different than the previous Siteimprove training for Site Owners and Content Authors.

What does the training consist of?

An online course has been created for all employees in UM Learn. It is a short, three-module course with no tests and will take about 30 minutes to complete.

This non-technical training demonstrates how to identify, prevent and remove barriers to accessible communication. It also includes a review of The Accessibility for Manitobans Act and the various legislation, standards, policies, and procedures that relate to communication and information barriers and accommodation.

How do I access the UM Learn course?

  1. Log in to UM Learn.
  2. Scroll down to My Courses at the bottom of the page (Note: You may need to select “View All Courses” to see all your available courses.)
  3. Choose Accessibility Training (Information and Communication Standard) from the course offerings list.

Compliance with the standard is a shared responsibility. Thank you for your commitment to ensuring the university’s information is accessible to all.
