cryo EM Seminar: Dr. Wayne Hendrickson, Violin Family Professor of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics, Columbia University

January 23, 2018 —

HENDRICKSON, WAYNE A., Ph.D.
University Professor and the Violin Family Professor of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics

Dr. Wayne Hendrickson, the Violin Family Professor of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics and Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Columbia University will deliver a seminar on technological advances in cryo EM, part of the Manitoba Group in Protein Structure and Function Cryo-Electron Microscopy Seminar Series.

Dr. Hendrickson has made numerous seminal contributions to structural biology research and is best known for developing multi-wavelength anomalous dispersion as a tool for solving the ‘phase problem’, which revolutionized protein X-ray crystallography in the late 1990s. His honors include the Gairdner International Award and the Aminoff Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Hendrickson and his colleagues have recently used cryo-electron microscopy to gain unprecedented views into the molecular basis for how the massive ryanodine receptor mediates calcium release into the cytosol of the cell, which is of central importance to many cellular functions, including muscle contraction.

Please join us on Wednesday Feb 7 to hear Dr. Hendrickson describe how incredible technological advances in cryo EM allowed he and his colleagues to achieve such detailed insight into this massive protein structure.
