Bisons teams launch fundraising drive

Support the women's hockey, women's basketball and men's hockey teams' fundraising drives

October 25, 2024 —

The Bisons are challenging our community to come together the herd as the women’s hockey team, women’s basketball team, and men’s hockey team kick off their fundraising efforts to help build a healthier future for their communities.

The nationwide Shoot for the Cure campaign, which started in 2007, sees primarily basketball teams raising money for breast cancer research and initiatives. The 2023-2024 initiative raised over $100,000. This year, Shoot for the Cure hopes to surpass the $2 million raised since the inception of the campaign.

Although Shoot for the Cure is an initiative in partnership with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the Bison women’s hockey team started their Pink in the Rink game to support the mission.

While the women’s basketball and hockey teams unite to raise money for breast, the men’s hockey team kicks off their fundraising efforts for men’s health on at their Movember game. Using the moustache as a platform, the team will raise funds for Movember, which invests in mental health, suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Director of Athletics and Recreation, Gene Muller says it’s incredible to see teams unite to engage with their communities.

“One of Bison Sport’s goals is to help develop our student-athletes as leaders and see the impact they can have in the city and across the province outside the fields of play,” Muller says. “These initiatives are a testament to their passion and belief in what it means to be a Bison.”

You can help the women’s basketball and hockey teams become a top fundraising school in the Shoot for the Cure campaign by making a donation in support of either team.

You can also help the men’s hockey team by donating in support of their Movember campaign.

Michelle Sung, Bisons women’s basketball head coach, says that while teams are usually competitive against each other during the season, “Shoot for the Cure unites teams across the country to work toward a common goal in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.”

The women’s hockey team launches their efforts at the Pink in the Rink game on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m.

The men’s hockey team kicks off their efforts at the Movember game on Nov 1. at 7 p.m.

The women’s basketball team kicks off their efforts at the Shoot for the Cure game against Brandon on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.

You can donate to the men’s hockey, women’s hockey or women’s basketball fundraisers today. Donations over $20 are eligible for a tax receipt.
