Bison Volleyball secures cross-town honour
The University of Manitoba Bisons have won the 23rd annual Duckworth Challenge with the 2-0 sweep of the Winnipeg Wesmen Volleyball teams this past Thursday on the Wesmen home court. Bison women took their match 3-0 and the men 3-1. The University of Manitoba Bison teams continue to build on their winning Duckworth Challenge record of 12-6-5.
With soccer being added this year to the list of sports competing in the challenge, the competition will now be determined by 5 matches in 3 different sports (men’s/women’s volleyball and basketball and women’s soccer). The Bison Soccer team claimed the first match of the Duckworth Challenge on September 20 by defeating the Wesmen 2-0.
The final stretch of the challenge will be played out on February 13, 2014 as basketball hits the hard court at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
The Duckworth Challenge was created by Dr. Henry E. Duckworth to highlight the competitive rivalry between the University of Manitoba Bisons and the University of Winnipeg Wesmen. Duckworth held seats as President of the University of Winnipeg from 1971-81 and Chancellor of the University of Manitoba from 1986-92.
Bison Women’s Volleyball opened their home season on Saturday night with another 3-0 set victory also against the Wesmen.
