Actuarial students place first at Munich Re Cup
A team of students from the University of Manitoba Actuarial Club (UMAC) placed first in the inaugural Munich Re Cup in Toronto on March 12. Asper students Bradley Abells, Jordan Gerry and Taylor Mitchell, and Faculty of Science student Kelly Ramsay, each came home with $5000 in prize money.
Hosted by reinsurance company Munich Re, the new actuarial case competition was open to all Society of Actuaries (SOA) Centres of Excellence across Canada. The Warren Centre for Actuarial Studies and Research at the Asper School of Business was named a Centre of Excellence in 2009.
Each of the seven participating schools could send a team of up to four students in their second or third year of university. “We held a mini case competition to decide which team from our group would represent the U of M at the event,” says Elizabeth Wanke, UMAC Co-President. “We couldn’t have done it without our academic advisor, Steve Scoles. I encourage all business students to participate in a case competition during their university career. It’s a great learning experience, stands out on a resume, and, clearly, U of M students have what it takes to do well!”
