A statement on our shared commitments

November 17, 2021 —

The University of Manitoba has a demonstrated commitment to Indigenous reconciliation, to anti-racist behaviour and to ensure a safe and respectful work and learning environment. Certain recent events have not aligned with these values, and we must do better. This is a challenging time for everyone in our community; it is understandable that many individuals are frustrated and tensions are high. As an institution of higher learning, we have an opportunity and an obligation to be leaders in respectful dialogue and to communicate our views, concerns and disagreements without malice, violence or discrimination.

We are aligned in our commitment to advance reconciliation and not to cause harm; we are aligned in our commitment to provide a safe environment, both online and in person, for all community members; we are aligned in our commitment to protect individuals’ rights to peaceful demonstrations and to engage in disagreement respectfully. Let us remember these shared and unifying commitments as we address the challenge before us and move forward to continue the mission and vision of Manitoba’s research university.
