School of Art Exhibitions explore visual art, ceramics, textiles

Two new exhibitions at the School of Art and School of Art Gallery include works by Master of Fine Art students and a multi-channel sound and video installation by a filmmaker/artist from the coldest city in the world.

Built a Place: 2018 MFA Thesis Exhibitions, May 18 – June 15, 2018

The School of Art and School of Art Gallery are pleased to present Built a Place, the thesis exhibitions and oral examinations by the three Master of Fine Art students: Katherine Boyer, Mary Stankevicius and Julia Wake. Their exhibitions will open on May 18 with a public reception from 6:30 – 8:30 pm, and close on June 15. During the exhibition period, each student will have an oral thesis exam that will also be open to the public.

Kaoru Ryan Suzuki: Interface the Land

Interface the Land reveals Kaoru Ryan Suzuki’s intimate relationship with bodies of water and the complexities of gas, fire and movement, as he endeavours to form transcendant connections with the land. Through intentional acts he explores spiritual transformation in the context of ritual performance. The resulting work is framed in the Transcontintental Performance Series, a series that uses geographical sites spanning the North American continent, from Baffin Island in Nunavut to the Yukon, and from Haida Gwaii to the Island of Ayiti in the Caribbean Sea. Suzuki’s methods of engagement include amplified water-listening meditations, aerial cinematography, dance and pilgrimage. His investigations are presented in the School of Art Gallery Special Collections Gallery in a multi-channel sound and video installation.

Kaoru Ryan Suzuki is a filmmaker/artist from the coldest city in the world. He works in cinema, nature-based performance, and installation art. Suzuki’s art has a deep connection to place. It has been produced in Borneo, Alaska, India, Iceland, China, Nunavut, Bangladesh, Germany, and most recently for the North America Transcontinental Performance Series. He has exhibited at museums, on the streets with “guerilla-style” public art installations, at IMAX and in galleries locally and internationally.
