Bison athletes embrace the spirit of the season

Bisons will be at Siloam Mission December from 5-8

December 6, 2017 —

This week marks the beginning of the competition break and the thirteenth consecutive year that Bison student-athletes will volunteer their time to help those in need. Each year, the University of Manitoba Athletic Council (UMAC), a student-athlete led committee, arranges a week for teams to visit the downtown organization to help make a difference.

Team members will be at Siloam Mission December from 5-8.

The initiative began with former Bison women’s volleyball player Lindsay Poggemiller-Smith in 2005 as she had been a volunteer at the Mission and later was involved as staff.

Fifth-year women’s hockey forward and UMAC co-chair Alana Serhan will be visiting Siloam Mission with the Bisons for the third time.

“Investing time to help others has been one of the most fulfilling experiences as a Bison,” said Serhan. “I have been so fortunate to be involved in so many volunteer opportunities and community programs. It is an integral part of being a Bison athlete not just around the holidays, but all year round.”

Throughout the week members of the men’s and women’s basketball teams and the women’s hockey team will be on hand to help throughout the week performing various tasks such as serving meals and sorting donations.
