Input from students needed

Have your voices heard and impact your programs. Fill out a short national student survey

February 9, 2017 —

First and final-year student in selected faculties will be asked to complete a short survey and have the chance to win $1,000.

The data collected in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) informs universities like the U of M of the programs and activities the university needs to invest in so that it can improve the student experience. Results from past surveys have had a direct impact on our community – see below.

“We have used the results of surveys like NSSE to help us make decisions about priorities for supporting students. This has resulted in creation of a Health and Wellness portfolio, dedicated positions for international students, and new initiatives to increase accessibility to our mental health resources. It has also helped us enhance our resources in areas such as sexual assault prevention and response, alcohol harm reduction, and responding to high-risk students,” says Don Stewart, executive director, Student Support at the U of M.

NSSE collects information about student participation in learning and personal development programs and activities, which is why it needs input from first and final-year students.

“The data this survey collects is of extreme importance to us,” says Randy Roller, executive director of the Office of Institutional Analysis. “It illuminates many aspects of student life and student views that would otherwise remain invisible to us. So it’s a wealth of information on the local level, but since it runs in all of Canada’s 15 biggest research-intensive universities, it also allows us to see trends on a national scale and position ourselves accordingly.”

Email invitations to participate in the survey will be sent from NSSE to eligible students beginning Feb. 9. All those who complete the survey by April 7 will be automatically entered to win one of 20 prizes.

Notable impacts of previous NSSE Surveys on our campus:

  • Providing enhanced academic, financial, and service supports for International students
  • Increasing academic support services (supplemental instruction workshops, writing tutors and clinics, and academic integrity education)
  • Enhancing academic advising across campus
  • Creating Career Compass — an academic support tool that integrates program requirements, career planning, and co-curricular activities for every undergraduate program and major
  • Promoting campus safety through educational outreach initiatives to address mental health, sexual health, and high risk drinking
