New International Education Strategy embraced

January 15, 2014 —

The University of Manitoba joins with the other U15 research-intensive universities in Canada in welcoming the Government of Canada’s announcement of a new International Education Strategy today.

“The University of Manitoba recognizes the importance of international education to Canada’s success as a nation,” said Dr. David T. Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba. “We are dedicated to furthering our international partnerships in education, teaching, and research to provide our students with an enhanced educational experience.”

U of M international student enrolment increased 18.5% overall in the fall of 2013, from 3,266 students last year, to 3,869 students this year. International students make up 11.4% of undergraduate students and 24.5% of graduate students.

“This new strategy is timely for the University of Manitoba, as we are in the final stages of development of our own international strategy for education, teaching and research,” said Dr. Digvir S. Jayas, Vice-President (Research and International). “This strategy on the part of the Government of Canada will enable us to ensure we are optimizing the many opportunities available to develop new partnerships and strengthen existing research collaborations.”
