UM remembers visionary, HD recipient, and generous philanthropist, John Buhler
UM bestowed Buhler with an honourary degree in 2011
The University of Manitoba community is deeply saddened by the passing of John Buhler, a visionary Winnipeg businessman, and generous philanthropist whose legacy will resonate for generations.
Buhler was widely respected for his entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to community development. As the founder of Buhler Industries Inc., he transformed “Standard Gas Engine Works” into a thriving business, leaving an indelible mark on Manitoba’s economic landscape. In 2011, UM bestowed Buhler with an honorary degree, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to our province.
The Buhler family’s philanthropy has touched countless lives, including those within our university community. In 2017, Drs. John and Bonnie Buhler donated $1 million to UM to support outstanding graduate students in music. Their gift continues to attract and support musical talent, and represents their belief in the value of education and the arts.
The University of Manitoba extends heartfelt condolences to John’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His generosity and dedication to making Manitoba a better place will continue to inspire us all.
