Globe and Mail, CTV: Assisted dying legislation likely to face challenges

April 15, 2016 —

As the Globe and Mail reports:

The proposed legislation does not include the committee’s recommendation to allow death hastening by way of advance directives for people with dementia. Harvey Max Chochinov is a professor of psychiatry and Canada Research Chair in Palliative Care at the University of Manitoba. He was chair of the External Panel on Options for a Legislative Response to Carter v. Canada.

As CTV reports:

Arthur Schafer, the founding director of the Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics at the University of Manitoba, said the proposed legislation may be challenged in court because it’s too restrictive. “The government’s made a good first step, but it’s been somewhat timid and the restrictions it’s imposed are somewhat rigid and inflexible,” said Schafer.
