Debra Parkes to speak at International Women’s Day Dinner
14th annual celebration on campus
The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8 during International Women’s Year 1975. Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions. Canada celebrates on that March 8 anniversary.
This year, the University of Manitoba celebrates one day early. The 14th annual International Woman’s Day Dinner is co-hosted by the Association of Employees Supporting Education Services (AESES) and will feature Debra Parkes, Associate Dean (Research & Grad Studies) and professor in the Faculty of Law, as the guest speaker.
Her talk, Challenging inequality: Reflections on women’s legal advocacy under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, highlights the growth in the overarching international women’s movement, which has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women’s rights and participation in the political and economic arenas.
Both the evening and Parkes’ lecture will also thematically serve as a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by women around the world.
