New issue of RadyUM highlights ‘Rehab Reconciliation’
The latest issue of RadyUM magazine is available now, in print and online, with a cover story about a successful wellness-building partnership between First Nations communities and the College of Rehabilitation Sciences.
The partnership, which started nine years ago, has given rise to more than 25 initiatives, including a 10-unit housing complex in Sagkeeng First Nation for adults who have lived with disability and homelessness, and a project in multiple First Nations called Grow Our Own Specialists through Education (GOOSE), which promotes careers in rehabilitation sciences to students starting in Grade 7.
The twice-yearly RadyUM brings you the latest news and student, faculty and alumni accomplishments from the six colleges of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences: the College of Community and Global Health, Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, Max Rady College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy and College of Rehabilitation Sciences.
Rady researchers profiled in the Summer 2025 issue include Dr. Marnie Kramer, an assistant professor of nursing whose research seeks to help students cope positively with stress and setbacks; Dr. Robert Schroth, a professor of preventive dental science who has become Canada’s leading expert in early childhood oral health; and Dr. Britt Drögemöller, an assistant professor of biochemistry and medical genetics who is honing in on the genetics of hearing loss.
Rady alumni showcased in this issue include medicine alum Dr. Shannon McDonald, a Métis physician who was recently honoured with a national Indspire Award; pharmacy alum Daryl Fediuk, a clinical pharmacology lead at Pfizer who credits a pharmacy professor as his most important mentor; and Dr. Tom Colina, a dentistry alum who has attained numerous “firsts,” including being the first Filipino dentist to open a practice in Winnipeg.
In other features, friends and colleagues pay tribute to the late Dr. Henry Friesen, a UM medical alum who became a towering figure in Canadian health research; Dr. Kellie Thiessen shares her vision as the new dean of the College of Nursing; and the clinical health psychology residency program celebrates 55 years.
