New issue of RadyUM dives into the RadyVerse

August 2, 2024 —

The cover story of the new issue of RadyUM magazine highlights the recent launch of RadyVerse, an initiative that is expanding the use of virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence and machine-learning options across the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.

The College of Nursing has been using VR as a teaching tool since Fall 2022. Other colleges have started to explore its potential for immersing learners in virtual settings where they can practise skills and respond to realistic health-care scenarios.

The twice-yearly RadyUM, published in print and online, brings you the latest news and student, faculty and alumni accomplishments from the five colleges of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences: the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, Max Rady College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy and College of Rehabilitation Sciences.

Rady researchers showcased in the Summer 2024 issue include Dr. Zulma Rueda, a member of the medical microbiology and infectious diseases department who holds a Canada Research Chair in sexually transmitted infection – resistance and control; Dr. Silvia Alessi-Severini, a pharmacy professor who mines health databases to study the effects of prescription drugs; and Dr. Juliana (Julie) Pfeffer, an assistant professor of restorative dentistry who focuses some of her research on caring for dental patients with developmental disabilities.

Rady alumni profiled in this issue include Melanie Sabourin and Mikaela Hoeppner, physiotherapists who co-own a fun physio clinic for children; nursing alum Karen Samson, who is executive director of health services and chief nursing officer at St. Boniface Hospital; and three-time UM alum Dr. Lorrie Kirshenbaum, a global leader in the field of cardiac cell death who holds a UM Canada Research Chair in molecular cardiology.

Other features highlight the 25th anniversary of a program at the UM dental college that provides no-cost dental care for inner-city children; plans for a high-containment lab that will help Rady scientists prepare for the next pandemic; and a symposium that focused on working toward reconciliation through Indigenous health research.
