What do you do when the spark runs out?

Did you know that end-of-life battery recycling is mandated by the Province of Manitoba? This means that batteries cannot be disposed of in the landfill or recycling bins. Since its inception in 2011, the University of Manitoba’s Battery Recycling Program has diverted more than 5.7 tonnes of common household batteries from landfill, the equivalent of approximately 3 hippopotamuses.

How do I register my office for the Battery Recycling Program?

• Email sustainability@umanitoba.ca 
• A training package, battery collection box and battery disposal guide will be provided to you.

What does the UM Battery Recycling Program mean for you?

• Office battery disposal boxes are the only designated collection points on campus.
• Training on proper battery disposal procedure, ensuring life and fire safety standards are met, reducing the risk of fire and environmental harm.
• Centralized disposal, meaning, UM staff/faculty are no longer responsible for arranging their own battery box shipment.
• Increased support from the Office of Sustainability and the Environment Health and Safety Office to safely dispose of your batteries.
