Bisons this week
The 24th annual Duckworth Challenge continues this week as the U of M volleyball and basketball teams will face their crosstown rivals, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.
The volleyball teams will open up competition on Thursday, January 29 when the Bisons host the Wesmen at Investors Group Athletic Centre. Friday, January 30 will feature the basketball teams in action at the Duckworth Centre in downtown Winnipeg. Every team gets a second change on Saturday, January 31 when the Bisons basketball teams host the Wesmen on the U of M campus, while the volleyball teams head downtown.
With the regular season winding down, these will be the final home games for the basketball and volleyball teams.
The Duckworth Challenge was started by Dr. Henry E. Duckworth, president of the U of W (1971-81) and Chancellor of the U of M (1986-92), in an effort to profile the intense, but friendly cross-town rivalry between the universities. They very first Duckworth Challenge was played in the 1991-92 season.
The women’s hockey team is on a roll, having won six straight games. The Bisons now sit comfortably in second place in the Canada West conference, and have clinched a playoff berth. On January 30 & 31 the Bisons will return to Wayne Fleming Arena on the U of M campus to host the Mount Royal Cougars.
On the road:
- The men’s hockey team has won five of their last six conference games. The hit the road to take on Mount Royal on January 29 & 30.
- The U of M track team will be eating banana pancakes while sitting, waiting, wishing for great results from the Jack Johnson Classic in Minneapolis on Saturday, January 31.
