UM condemns undue consequences for peaceful Chinese protesters
Supports and resources available for students
The University of Manitoba supports peaceful Chinese protesters and condemns any undue consequences for these democratic actions.
We have heard from Chinese students and others in our community how this is a very stressful and dangerous situation. We will continue to respond directly to comments and concerns including sharing available resources and supports.
To support greater understanding of the current protests in China, Dr. Tina Chen, UM’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Lead, will be hosting a Teach-In on Protest Movements in China – Past and Present. The event will take place on Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. Please register for the event here.
Thank you to those students, student leaders, staff and faculty who have shared your feedback and concerns. In alignment with UMGSA’s recent motion, we affirm UM’s support for the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The University of Manitoba is a place in which freedom of expression plays an important role, and a diversity of people and viewpoints are to be expected and celebrated. To that end, all members of the university community are welcome to peacefully represent their personal or religious beliefs.
UM celebrates and supports our diverse community and reminds everyone that we are committed to a safe work and learning environment.
