Fall 2014 convocation to honour visionary journalist, financial trailblazer
This fall, 1,403 graduands are eligible to receive their diplomas at Fall Convocation 2014, the highest-ever number for the Fall.
During Fall Convocation, honorary degrees for distinguished achievement will be awarded to:
Chantal Hebert
Chantal St-Cyr Hébert, whose reportage and commentary have profoundly shaped the way Canadians understand their government, their country and their place in global society. She is a national affairs writer with the Toronto Star, a guest columnist for L’Actualité and a regular voice on the “At Issue” political panel on CBC’s The National. Guided by integrity, skepticism and a challenger’s mind, Hébert has promoted and protected our democracy through her insightful questioning of the status quo. The University of Manitoba is proud to recognize her with an Honorary Doctor of Science (honoris causa).

Richard Waugh
Rick Waugh, a University of Manitoba graduate [BComm(Hons)/70] whose career reflects a truly Canadian success story – a story that started from humble beginnings and culminated with trailblazing achievements in Canada’s banking sector. He began his career as a Bank of Nova Scotia teller in Winnipeg and over the next 43 years ascended to the apex of the banking world, moving from Scotiabank’s treasury, corporate international and retail banking areas, to eventually serving as Scotiabank’s President and CEO from 2003 until his recent retirement. The University of Manitoba is proud to honour him with an Honorary Doctor of Laws (honoris causa).

Dr. Martin Scanlon
In addition to the honorary degrees, the University of Manitoba Graduate Students’ Association Teaching Award will be presented to Martin Scanlon. Dr. Scanlon is the Acting Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. He is an exemplary professor, advisor and mentor who has led numerous studies that impact us all. His research concerns our food: he’s keenly interested in how food processing changes the mechanical properties of food materials. Since joining the faculty at the University of Manitoba in 1991, he has advised or co-advised 13 postdoctoral fellows, 12 doctoral students, 26 masters students and 9 undergraduate student researchers.

Two sessions of the 47th Fall Convocation at the University of Manitoba will be held on: Wednesday, October 22, 2014 and Thursday, October 23, 2014. Each session will begin at 3:30 pm in the Investors Group Gym.
