President Barnard receives Lifetime Achievement award

University of Manitoba President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. David Barnard was honoured Saturday with a Lifetime Achievement award from the India Canada Culture and Heritage Association (ICCHA).

“Dr. Barnard was selected for the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding leadership in promoting higher education and academic scholarship, not only in Manitoba, but also in Canada,” said Dr. Naranjan S. Dhalla, chairman of the board of trustees of the India Canada Culture and Heritage Association.

President Barnard addressed the audience at the ICCHA Awards Dinner and shared his vision for the role education plays in improving our quality of life.

“I am truly humbled to receive this award,” he said. “The University of Manitoba values its close connection to India and to Manitoba’s Indian community. These relationships are a key component of our University’s success and help to position Manitoba at the forefront of emerging opportunities.”

Previous recipients of this award include alumnus Mayor Sam Katz, Manitoba’s former premier Gary Doer, and University of Manitoba President Emeritus Emőke J.E. Szathmáry.

ICCHA is a non-profit organization established in 2004 to promote human rights, education and racial, religious and cultural harmony in Canada. ICCHA has created a number of awards including the annual Life Time Achievement award for individuals who have achieved distinction in their profession and service to the community, the nation and the world.
