Meet Yasaman Kashani, 2020-2021 Alexander E. Rattray Scholarship in Landscape Architecture recipient

May 19, 2021 —

In honour of Professor Alexander E. Rattray and his career-long contributions to the Department of Landscape Architecture, his colleagues, friends, graduates and students established an endowment fund to support International students entering into the Department of Landscape Architecture in the Faculty of Architecture.

The 2020-2021 recipients were Yasaman Kashani and Lia Liu.  We ask Yasaman to answer the following questions:

What are you most proud of in regards to your educational achievements?
Studying a master’s degree in another language rather than a mother tongue is very challenging. I am pleased that I’ve done my best in achieving this hard goal.

What professors have most impacted your learning in the Faculty of Architecture?
I see the world as a range of grey color, not black and white. I have learned so much from every single professor – I listen to everyone and pick up what I think I need.

What is the one thing people don’t know about you that they would be surprised to learn?
My interest in Landscape Architecture came about when I was a nature tour guide in my home country.

Who or what inspires you?
I feel that every small thing matters to keeping me motivated and on my path.  Our thoughts and mentality are influenced partially by the environment that we are living in. A good atmosphere can help you to have a better point of view.

How has receiving this award helped with your educational achievements?
Living abroad and studying in a second language is challenging – working on top of that makes life harder. This award let me have peace of mind to focus on my studies.

What is one piece of advice you would give to students in the Faculty of Architecture?
Join extracurricular activities to create your network and read about what interested you a lot.

What words would you like to share with the donor of this award?
I want to say thank you for making lives easier. I’m glad that I received this award and appreciate it very much.
