Sustainable Halloween

Saturday, October 31

Although this year will look different due to the pandemic, there are plenty of creative ways to celebrate protecting your health and the planet. Here are some recommendations on how to make a spooky and special event while reducing the amount of waste associated with this year’s festivities:

  • Make your costumes from old clothing and textiles. Not only will this save resources, but it will also save you money!
  • Make your own treats to share with your household; the options are endless – like adding toppings to your popcorn for a movie night.
  • Host a virtual pumpkin carving contest. Don’t forget to put that pumpkin to use: make a pumpkin pie or roasted pumpkin seeds.
  • Create a Quarantine-O-Ween, whether that’s looking for treats in the backyard, a virtual Halloween-themed trivia night or a scary movie night.

Going Green social media contest

Post a comment on the @SustainableUofM Instagram explaining what changes you’ve made this month, like the post and tag a friend – and you’re entered to win!  You could win one of three zero-waste prize packs, which includes a bamboo utensil set, produce bags, tote bag, water bottle and a camping mug.
