May 22, 2019 —

The Faculty of Science announced today that it has formed, Data Science NEXUS, a new data science research centre.

NEXUS will lead innovation and discovery in data science, an emerging field that is quickly shaping and reshaping our world. NEXUS aims to aid the U of M and the province in remaining competitive on the global stage.

Initially, NEXUS will focus on the following:

  • promote interdisciplinary research and collaboration across campus;
  • educate and train data scientists at the undergraduate and graduate level by providing experiential learning opportunities for students;
  • advanced training of post-doctoral fellows and visiting scientists to enrich the learning environment for all;
  • serve and collaborate with industry, government, and non-academics in transforming data into useful knowledge for optimal decision-making.

A task force consisting of an executive committee with representatives from Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, and other disciplines along with an External Advisory Committee made up of community leaders are providing advice and counsel and support to NEXUS’ strategic goals.

Plans are already underway for an International Data Science Conference, hosted by NEXUS  November 13-15, 2019, at the University of Manitoba

The conference will bring global experts together to share a variety of perspectives on current and emerging trends in Data Science from Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Government and Industry. The conference will also include a challenge event for students, poster sessions and opportunities for research feedback.
