Shona Grewar named Business Students’ Association President of the Year
Shona Grewar, 2018-19 president of the Asper Commerce Students’ Association (CSA), was recently awarded with the Business Students’ Association President of the Year award at the Roundtable Conference in Hamilton, Ontario.
The Canadian Association of Business Students (CABS) awards are given out based on member-initiated nominations and votes. The winners of each award were announced at the closing gala at the Roundtable Conference in early March.
What does this award mean to you?
Being president has been a truly unforgettable experience. Looking back on the year, it’s been exciting to see my team’s collective vision come together.
Although this is technically an individual award, this win was a team effort and I have the whole CSA team to thank for executing their roles so well. The passion and drive the executive and general councils demonstrated every day motivated me to be a stronger leader.
I’m proud of the events we hosted and the initiatives we executed throughout the year. I’m honoured to have been awarded by my peers from across Canada with this recognition!
What have you learned being in this leadership position?
Maya Angelou says, “At the end of the day, people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.” I think this quote encompasses what I learned the most about leadership this year.
To me, the most important aspects of leadership revolve around ensuring your whole team feels supported, appreciated and heard. When people feel attached to their work and the team’s mission and vision, everything else comes a lot more naturally.
We had an amazing team this year and they were motivated to continue growing our organization and enhancing our events.
What has the CSA accomplished for this academic year?
We have had an incredibly successful year. We executed the CSA annual program and have also added some new initiatives. In terms of charitable campaigns, we raised over $20,000 for both Shinerama and 5 Days for the Homeless. We had a record sellout and record sponsorship for the Business Banquet. We were able to implement a newly revitalized peer mentorship program and held our first Student Appreciation Week. We wanted to focus on community outreach this year and build awareness of what the CSA does and can do for Asper students.
You’ll be graduating this June. What’s your plan for post-graduation?
I will be taking some time off over the summer to recharge. I plan to balance travel and time in Manitoba enjoying all the great activities and festivals the warm weather brings. I hope to start full-time work in September and am currently exploring opportunities in both finance and marketing.
