Applications for the 2023 3MT© and MT180© competitions are now open!
Attention all Graduate Students: Applications to compete in the 3MT© and MT180© competitions are now open!
Would you like to share your research and master your presentation skills? You won’t want to miss the opportunity to compete in the Three Minute Thesis (English) and/or the Ma these en 180 secondes competitions (French).
3MT and MT180 are research communication competitions where graduate students have three minutes to explain to judges and an audience what their research is about, and why it is important. The challenge is to convey ideas and principles of research in a way that will be understandable to a non-specialist audience.
These competitions are a unique opportunity for graduate students to showcase their innovative and significant research to a wider audience, across disciplines within the University, and to the broader public, with the possibility of winning some great cash prizes.
Applications for these competitions are now open. All graduate students in a thesis-based program are eligible to apply. Kelley Main, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, encourages students to consider participating. “This is such a wonderful event to participate in, it is a chance for your research to be viewed by a large audience. Last year’s heats and finals have been viewed over 4400 times!”.
Pranav Mishra, who won top place at the 2022 3MT competition at UM shared his experience of competing .” I would say, three-minute thesis is an amazing opportunity that provides a platform to come forward and present your research in front of a huge crowd. It also gives you a chance to talk about your research at the regional and national levels. For me, participating in 3MT was fun and exciting. It also helped me a lot in overcoming the fear of public speaking, to form connections and also improve my CV. I would encourage everyone to give it a shot. This is an incredible opportunity and impressive in itself. Trust me, 3MT is worth it. Good luck! ”
Eligibility, rules and judging criteria for both competitions can be found on the UM 3MT and MT180 website. The deadline to apply for the competitions is January 23rd, 2023. Apply today!
