On April 14 Science marches on!
For an event that only started a year ago, the March for Science has an awful lot of momentum behind it. Last year’s inaugural event, held on April 22, 2017, saw more than a million people in over 600 locations across all 7 continents come together to advocate for the importance of science.
This year, there are more than 230 satellite events around the world. The local MFS event will see Samar Safi-Harb, Canada Research Chair in Supernova Remnants Astrophysics, Faculty of Science, speak on “Why on Earth Should We (on Earth) Care about Space?”
“I was invited by organizer Nathan Zahn. Given my passion about science (in general) and astrophysics (in particular), I was delighted to join this effort! I aim in my speech to highlight the importance of astrophysics to our society and economy … and share the excitement from doing it while educating the next generation of innovators.”
The 2018 MFS will include multiple events world-wide, ranging from science expos and rallies to large-scale marches. The organizations’ overall goals include strengthening the role of science in public policy; increasing public interaction and interest in science; fostering a diverse and inclusive scientific community and building a global network of science advocates.
Safi-Harb believes that this event will be “… a unique opportunity for scientists to connect with the public, politicians, taxpayers and the next generation to share the excitement from discoveries in science, and importantly the relevance of science to our community, society and country.”
The Winnipeg March for Science event will be held at the Manitoba Legislature (450 Broadway) from 1:00pm to 2:30 p.m. this Saturday, April 14th. All are welcome to attend, it is organized by ScienceFirst and supported by the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Science.
