Bisons head coach sets record for most wins
The University of Manitoba Bisons men’s volleyball swept the Regina Cougars this past weekend to improve their record to 3-1 in Canada West conference play.
Saturday’s victory was not just another win for the men’s volleyball team. Head coach Garth Pischke has now set the North American all-time coaching match win record for men’s volleyball with his 1,240th overall victory.
“This was not just another match,” stated Pischke following win number 1240, “I am thinking about a lot of very good players and teams and all the memories. It has been fun to be a part of it.”
Pischke’s 1240 wins is also the most by a head coach in CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) history.
“It was cool to win and break the record at home,” continued Pischke. “For me, it would not have been as special and emotional if it was accomplished on the road. I was happy our team won in front of family and fans.”
The Winnipeg native is now in his 33rd year at the helm of the Bisons and currently holds an overall coaching record of 1240-336 (.787). Pischke has now surpassed the mark recently set by legendary UCLA coach Al Scates who ended his 50-year coaching career in 2012 with a 1239-290 (.810) winning record.
“It’s been a long time and maybe now I will try and get to 2000 wins!” joked Pishke. The Bisons men’s volleyball team will look to add to their head coach’s record when the head on the road and face UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, BC this upcoming weekend.
