UM is space to explore complex issues of local and global importance
Policies outline the university’s care of duty for all who visit our campuses
UM is aware of a protest encampment planned for May 7-9 on the Fort Garry campus. UM supports academic freedom, the right of our entire campus community to engage in freedom of expression and the right to assemble and protest, in accordance with university policies and the law. As with all events on our campuses, our expectation is that it will remain a safe and respectful environment.
Universities have long been at the center of political and social activism; places where debate can occur around broad societal and global issues, and UM is committed to serving as a space to explore complex issues of local and global importance, rooted in a place of inquiry and respect for human dignity.
UM policies outline the university’s care of duty for all who visit our campuses. Any activities that violate laws, risk physical safety, disrupt or impede the ability of students, faculty and staff to learn, teach, research and work on our campuses will not be permitted.
These restrictions respect the individual rights of our community members while upholding UM’s obligation to support the needs of its teaching, research and learning activities.
We urge everyone in our UM community to demonstrate kindness and compassion with one another, fulfilling our collective obligation to create a welcoming community for all. We understand that certain events can impact members of our community in different ways and encourage anyone who needs to talk or seek support to reach out to our counseling services, which are available to all students and staff.
