Students Lead Giving for Chapel Upgrades
In a stride towards preserving our Christ the King Chapel, St. Paul’s College, Rector Christopher J. Adams (SPC/UM ‘83’86) and Kevin Bridges (SPC/UM ’84), at the helm of The Welcome Home Project, are pleased to unveil a recent contribution from the College’s student body.
Under the guidance of the 2023-24 Senior Stick, Ms. Bridget Scott, $30,000 was gifted by the St. Paul’s College Students’ Council to propel this fundraising endeavour forward.
“Our Council members wanted to be part of this project. Christ the King Chapel is a beautiful space, we feel welcomed here and lucky. The Chapel is a place that as students we don’t want to take for granted,” says Scott.
Scott’s leadership skills come naturally, her father Jeff (SPC/UM’91) and brother, Brendan (SPC/UM ’20) also served as College Senior Sticks. Her mother Dorothy (SPC/UM ’92,95) currently serves as chair of the Board of Governors.
“Kevin Bridges and I thank our students for their leadership. This gift helps to ensure we are on are way to raising the $350,000 required for our Chapel, ” Dr. Adams said.
Adams added, “Unlike a parish, The Welcome Home Project is a commitment by the College’s Board of Governors and our community to restore and revitalize our Chapel, a sacred cornerstone of our institution’s faith and heritage. We are excited to greet our College community when we gather for our 100th celebrations in 2026-27.”
Eliude Cavalcante (UM ’02), Director of Campus Ministry, is looking forward to the revitalization, noting that in recent years the Chapel roof had been repaired along with the pews being re-stained and cushions added. The new initiative encompasses the restoration of the exterior tiles, adding an interior crucifix, creating a space for reconciliation, and modernizing the lighting fixtures and electrical infrastructure. Additionally, the project will rejuvenate Side Chapel amenities and grace its sacred gallery with two new stained-glass windows, each a poignant tribute to a century of excellence.
The student cohort has directed their generosity towards Chapel tiles and the creation of commemorative stained-glass masterpieces, inspired by our Priest Chaplin Fr. Mark Filips, (SPC/UM ’03). In addition to their leadership, three alumni members have each pledged $25,000, alongside the generous support from the Sir Thomas Sill Foundation Inc., which extended a grant of $15,000.
St. Paul’s College honours its student and alumni members, campus ministry community, and its rich heritage at the University of Manitoba.
