Social Work Standing in Solidarity with Ukraine for Human Dignity, Peace, and Justice
As the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine continues to escalate, the resolve of Ukrainians—and all who respect the dignity of human life—grows stronger. UM’s Faculty of Social Work stands in solidarity with Ukraine in the fight for fundamental human rights, social justice, and freedom from tyranny.
We condemn the Russian government’s unlawful war and deceitful propaganda, with which they are manipulating their own citizens and the world.
We extol the brave resilience of Ukraine and call upon all who stand for peace to deepen their support. However, we condemn the mistreatment and discrimination of racialized persons, particularly students, who are obstructed from finding refuge in bordering countries.
We grieve with friends and family as the human cost of this war continues to rise.
Manitoba is enriched by cultural and familial ties to Ukraine. Social Work is mindful of how these community ties bring joy and meaning to our lives.
We reach out with compassion, especially to students and staff who trace their roots to Ukrainian land and culture.
We are heartened by the rallying of so many in support. We fervently hope for a swift end to this and all conflicts, where justice is served, and human dignity is valued above despotic greed.
