Remembering Jeff Funnell: Celebrated Artist, Beloved Educator, and Creative Force

The School of Art at the University of Manitoba is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of retired professor and celebrated artist Jeff Alan Funnell on November 23, 2024, at the age of 83.

Jeff was a regarded artist and beloved educator whose unconventional and thought-provoking work left an indelible mark on the art community in Winnipeg and beyond. After earning his MFA from the University of Cincinnati in 1970, Jeff taught at the University of Calgary before returning to Winnipeg, where he embarked on a long and impactful teaching career at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art.

Among his many contributions was the creation of the “OFF-ICE Gallery,” where he transformed his cleaned-out academic office into a dynamic exhibition space for students—a testament to his support for emerging talent.

Known for his humor, wit, and critical engagement with the art world, Jeff embodied an unconventional approach to life and art. He often pushed boundaries, creating works that both embraced and rejected the norms of the art world. His work servings as both a critique and a joyful rebellion.

Jeff’s influence extended beyond his own practice. As School of Art instructor Derek Brueckner reflected:

“Jeff was always willing to discuss challenges and offer guidance, whether as a mentor to students or as a supportive colleague. He encouraged emerging artists, brought groundbreaking figures like Lucas Samaras to the University, and engaged deeply with the local and international art community.”

In addition to a long exhibition history, Jeff’s work, held in collections such as the Confederation Centre of the Arts and the Canada Council Art Bank, is celebrated for its playful yet serious nature—much like the artist himself. His profound influence as a teacher, mentor, and friend will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Jeff’s life will be held in 2025. In the meantime, the School of Art extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life and work. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
