New fund supports leadership development for women in the Rady Faculty

October 21, 2019 —

Women students and faculty members in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences will get an opportunity to develop their leadership skills thanks to a newly established fund.

The Winnipeg Foundation Martha Donovan Leadership Fund is a $250,000 fund created to provide leadership development opportunities for women in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. For the next five years, $50,000 will be made available on an annual basis.

The fund, granted by the Winnipeg Foundation in 2019, is open to:

  • Women, who are full-time academic faculty members with a primary appointment in a department/college of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, are eligible to apply for support for academic leadership training.
  • Women who are students (full-time or part-time) or post-doctoral trainees (including residents), presently enrolled in a program of study within the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences are also eligible to apply for support for leadership training.

Dr. Sara Israels, vice-dean, academic affairs, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences said that the fund is intended to support the interest and success of women moving into leadership roles at the university and in the community.

“In 2019 women are still under-represented in leadership positions, both in the academic and in clinical health-care settings. We want to encourage women students and faculty to consider leadership as part of their future careers,” said Israels, “These awards will provide opportunities for women to explore the benefits and challenges of leadership, to develop the skills required to become effective leaders, and to meet other women with similar goals.

The Winnipeg Foundation Martha Donovan Leadership Fund will be administered through the Office of the Vice-Dean Academic Affairs, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. Applications will be reviewed and adjudicated by members of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Awards Committee. One competition is held annually.
