Finding You at Mini U
As she heads into her third summer with Mini U Programs, U of M student Rachel Cumpsty reflects on her initial interest in working with children, the skills she’s sharpened in preparation for her prospective teaching career, and provides encouragement for potential Mini U leader applicants.
What attracted you to the Mini U leader position?
I have a few friends who’ve worked for Mini U and talked about it being an amazing place to work. I’ve enjoyed working with kids, and had previous experience with summer programs. When I saw the advertisements around campus, it seemed like the perfect way to spend my summer.
What was your experience like as a Mini U leader?
Incredible. I got to come to work every day and love every minute of it. That’s something hard to find. Where else can you play glow in the dark nine-square, or brag to kids that you’re nine-for-ten on the wiggle bridge? However, the best part is the people I’ve met.
What brought you back for another summer at Mini U? How was being a returning leader different?
The culture and the people. We’re a family, and some of the best people I’ve met are from Mini U. Also, the opportunities I’ve had, and the skills I’ve gained are things I’ll take with me moving forward into my career in the classroom.
As a returning leader, I was looked to not just lead children, but my colleagues as well.
Is there anything about the leader position that would be helpful for applicants to know?
I didn’t expect how invested the entire leadership team would be. The amount of support from everyone is incredible. You’re consistently supported throughout the summer, and each member of the leadership team is committed in your success. You’re not alone, because you have an entire team here to support you.
Any words for those on the fence of applying for a leader position?
If you’re nervous about applying because you’re worried about not fitting in, don’t let that stop you. At previous jobs, I sometimes felt I didn’t fit in. But working at Mini U, you’re celebrated for your uniqueness and style you bring to the team. After my first summer working here, I knew I finally found my people.
Application deadline for leader positions for spring/summer 2020 are due Jan. 31. Visit miniu.ca for full application details.
