Doping in sport

February 7, 2014 —

Dean Kriellaars, adjunct professor in physiology and a researcher in the University of Manitoba’s Health, Leisure, and Human Performance Institute, talks about the physiological affects of performance enhancement and the future of doping.

For the London 2012 Games, the Guardian newspaper reported that the International Olympic Committee conducted more than 6,000 blood and urine tests during the Olympics, catching nine cheating athletes. But 117 were caught out by anti-doping agencies in the run-up to the Games since April.

Here’s Dean Kriellaars on what doping does, why it’s hard to spot, and what the latest trends are.

Research at the University of Manitoba is partially supported by funding from the Government of Canada Research Support Fund.
