Celebrating the Art of German Lieder
Graham Johnson and Martha Guth will be in residence at the University of Manitoba's Desautels Faculty of Music from Nov. 28-Dec. 1, 2022.
Graham Johnson, “that peerless accompanist” (Daily Telegraph, November 2015) and Juno and Grammy Award nominated recitalist and concert soprano Martha Guth will be in residence at the University of Manitoba’s Desautels Faculty of Music from Nov. 28-Dec. 1, 2022. Thanks to a scholarship established by Mark and Zita Bernstein, the DFOM will host four days of special events in conjunction with the Zita Bernstein Lieder competition, featuring masterclasses and a recital performance not to be missed.
Graham Johnson is recognized as one of the world’s leading vocal accompanists. He is a founding member of the Songmakers’ Almanac, created in 1976 to explore the neglected areas of piano-accompanied vocal music. Johnson’s impressive recording projects include all of Schubert’s lieder — 37 discs in all, with an ongoing French Song series in the works. All of these recordings are issued with Johnson’s remarkable programme notes.
He will be joined by Canadian Soprano Martha Guth, who has a decades-long musical partnership with Johnson. Together, they will explore a program that considers the musical evolutions of Schubert, Fauré, Poulenc and Britten. As well as teaching at Ithaca College, Guth is co-founder of Sparks and Wiry Cries, which publishes works, hosts live performances and commissions new works. She is the creative energy behind Sparks and Wiry Cries’ songSLAM, fashioned after poetry slams and storytelling events.
These events are free of charge and open to the public, although registration through Eventbrite is required. Spend the week listening to Graham Johnson and Martha Guth share their wisdom and then enjoy the rare opportunity to hear them perform in recital together on Nov. 30.
