Free U of M science camp teaches inner-city youth a health career within reach
From July 16-20 students from Grades 5 to 12 are exploring science in a university atmosphere at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences’ annual Biomedical Youth Program Summer Camp. This year, 140 students will participate in the free BYP summer camp activities.
“We want Winnipeg’s inner-city youth to experience the health sciences hands-on. Our goal is to get them excited about being health-care professionals or scientists and to have them understand that these careers are well within reach,” says Dr. James Gilchrist, the program’s director and a professor of oral biology in the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry.
Students rotate through the variety of workshops held across Bannatyne Campus and at the Inner-City Science Centre at Niji Mahkwa School, a joint project of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and the Winnipeg School Division.

At the Inner-City Science Centre, U of M graduate students will run a series of hands-on lab experiments at the state-of-the-art labs.
On Bannatyne Campus, students will perform blood typing in the session on Genetics. In the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, participants will fill teeth and make a thumb print impression using alginate. In Microscopy, they will learn about using microscopes and prepare tissues such as cheek cells and onion cells for staining. The Protein Isolation workshop will teach participants how to measure protein concentration, a basic lab method. In the Physiotherapy workshop, students will try their hands at various techniques employed in this health profession.
