CBC: Stem cells for ‘reverse aging,’ possible immortality?

University of Manitoba ethics professor Arthur Schafer was asked for comment on a story involving the use of stem cells to deter — or even reverse — the aging process after former Winnipegger Peter Nygard boasted about a “scientific breakthrough” made by doctors in his employ. In a video posted to YouTube, the 70-year-old fashion commerce giant has called the technology a “game changer,” and claims, “I want to live forever, or die trying.”

In the story, Schafer, who is head of the Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics in the department of philosophy, Faculty of Arts, cautioned that “The use of stem cell technology to create super men and wonder women has many people feeling uneasy,” but suggested that the up side of the video was that it could er, rejuvenate the ethics debate around the use of stem cells.
