Scientific American: How Deadly Is Mpox, What Vaccines are Effective, and Other Questions Answered
August 30, 2024 —
It’s hard to determine, says Jason Kindrachuk, a virologist at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. He says that the DRC is experiencing two outbreaks simultaneously. The clade I virus, which has been endemic in forested regions of the DRC for decades, circulates in rural regions where people get it from animals. That clade was renamed Ia after the discovery of clade Ib. Animal studies suggest that clade I is deadlier than clade II — but Kindrachuk says it’s hard to speculate what that means for humans at this point.
Even when not fatal, mpox can trigger fevers, aches and painful fluid-filled skin lesions.
