The Micro-Certificate in Songmaking is back for the 2024 school year!

The Micro-Certificate in Songmaking gives musicians of popular genres intensive training in the essential skills they need to write, record, produce, and promote their music, all while being mentored by notable industry professionals.

August 28, 2024 —

Ever wanted to write a song but don’t know where to start? Are you not a music major, but have always been interested in music? Then check out the Micro-Certificate in Songmaking!

As Lana Winterhalt one of the instructors in the program explains, the Micro-Certificate in Songmaking was created to provide a different pathway for different types of music enthusiasts who may not want to pursue a university music degree in classical or jazz music. It is specifically designed for musicians of modern popular genres (e.g. rock, indie, rap, R&B, etc.) and is taught by Winnipeg music professionals who have made careers in these genres. The sole requirement for admission is to be 18 years or older.

The program is comprised of 6 individual courses, and students can choose to take all 6 courses in order to attain the micro-certificate, or can opt to take only the courses that interest them (in this case, they will not receive the micro-certificate credential). Grading for all of the courses is designated as pass/fail.

The full slate of courses is held within a single academic year, beginning fall term, and ending winter term. The program is designed to be able to be completed in one year, with courses held evenings and weekends, to accommodate working professionals. However, students have 4 years to complete the program, should they decide to do so.
