Rec Club Spotlight: U of M Rugby Club

January 22, 2019 —

At the University of Manitoba, Recreation Services provides students, staff and alumni the opportunity to participate in organized sport and physical activity through Rec Clubs.

UMToday chatted with U of M Rugby club president, Andy Black, to learn more about the club and why he loves being a part of it.

Why did you decide to become president of your club?

I’ve had a passion for rugby since I started playing in 2016, and when presented with the opportunity to help grow the game and the rugby community around the University of Manitoba, I couldn’t resist.

What have you learned while being an executive member of your club?

I’ve learned much more than expected. I’ve acquired significantly better time management skills since joining the executive of the rugby club. As well as learning time management, I’ve learned to be much more comfortable talking in front of large groups.

What are some social and/or physical benefits of being in your club?

Rugby itself is a fantastic form of exercise and can help lead people into a healthier lifestyle. The social aspect of rugby is amazing. Personally, I met all my best friends playing rugby. The rugby community is tight knit and welcoming. If you’re looking to make to friends, the rugby club is the place to do it.

Are there any specific events/tournaments/achievements you want to highlight?

The annual Wayne Nebraska tournament is the biggest tournament the club participates in. Every year, the club travel with a men’s team and women’s team to Nebraska to play in the largest university rugby tournament in the USA. We also participate in a lot of local tournaments, one in Saskatchewan, and one in Ontario.

Why do you think it’s important for students to join a Rec Club?

It’s a great way to get your mind off school for a couple hours a week, on top of getting a good source of physical activity. Also, when joining a Rec Club, you’ll meet great people with similar interests and create great friendships that will last forever.

If you’re interested in trying Rugby, the club is hosting its annual Try Rugby Day, Jan. 31 at 5:30 PM. The event will take place at the University of Manitoba Frank Kennedy Centre Gold Gym. No experience? No problem. The goal of the event is to have fun and learn a new sport.
