Women’s Hockey gets the job done
Bisons win 2018 U SPORTS National Championship
The University of Manitoba Bison women’s hockey team was crowned 2018 U SPORTS Champions after shutting out the Western Mustangs 2-0 on March 18 in London, Ont.
This was the first time the Bisons were seeded number one at a womens hockey national championship in their sixth appearance. With the win, the Bisons earned their first national championship in the program’s 21-year history.
“This team had laser focus and thought their approach all year was on point and it paid off,” said Bison women’s head coach and 2017-18 U SPORTS Coach of the Year John Rempel [BA/95, BRS/00]. “We had outstanding control throughout the gold medal game and thought our second was one of the best periods we played all season. I thought the game was on our stick throughout and we played like we had played throughout the season.”
This championship victory marks the Bisons’ 44th U SPORTS National Championship across all sports.
The celebration
An event celebrating the 2018 U SPORTS Champions, Bison women’s hockey and Bison swimmer Kelsey Wog, was held March 23 in UMSU University Centre with Billy, UMFM’s Trevor “Teebz” Alexander and the Ace Burpee Show broadcasting live from the event.
