“Team Toba” takes the icy plunge on Nov. 6 to raise money for the United Way

November 5, 2014 —

A brave team of 50 costumed students from the University of Manitoba’s Asper School of Business will be “Chillin’ 4 Charity” tomorrow, Nov. 6, to raise funds for the United Way of Winnipeg.

“Team Toba” will take the icy plunge at the Duckworth Quadrangle, adjacent to the Administration Building on the University’s Fort Garry campus, on Thursday, November 6th, at 11:30 a.m.

The team is competing in an undergraduate business student competition called Jeux de Commerce (JDC) West. Each year, competing teams from business schools across Western Canada host their own “Chillin’ 4 Charity” event.

JDC West is an opportunity for students to showcase their talents in a variety of competitive areas, including academics, sports and spirit. The event consists of 10 academic case competitions, a parliamentary-style debate, a highly competitive sports component, a team spirit competition, and a charity element.

“Our goal is to raise $15,000 for the United Way of Winnipeg,” says team co-captain Eben Rawluk.

His co-captain, Luke McKim, says, “Each individual team member has committed to raise $200, and many of our members have surpassed that goal.”

“We are so proud of our team’s enthusiasm about volunteering both time and effort to enhance our local community,” says Deanna Mirlycourtois, the team’s Vice-President (Charity).

Following the leap into an outdoor pool of icy water, members of Team Toba will be able to warm up in a heated tent courtesy of Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, the JDC West Team Sponsor. RBC will also be present as a Premier Charity Partner and will donate $5,000 to the cause. Virgin Radio’s Ace Burpee will be on site to emcee the event. Spectators will be encouraged to make a donation to the United Way of Winnipeg.
