Rich man, poor man: Raising money for the homeless

September 29, 2014 —

WHAT: The Rich Man, Poor Man Fundraising Dinner is a unique student-run and student-driven charity dinner that is about giving back to our community.

THE GOAL: To raise money for charitable organizations that help the homeless, such as Siloam Mission.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: The theme dinner is symbolic; one out of every eight people will receive a Rich Man meal: a three-course meal with wine. The other seven will receive the Poor Man meal—a one-course meal without wine. The night is designed to draw attention to issues relating to food security, access to housing and advocacy. In addition to the dinner, there are presentations by guest speakers and a silent auction.

THE INSPIRATION: “Throughout our medical student training, we have been instilled with the values of advocacy and community,” says event chair and medical student Scott Hodgson. “This event is our answer to those teachings.”

THE IMPACT: Over the past two years, College of Medicine students have raised more than $5,000 for different charities throughout the city, including Winnipeg Harvest. The funds raised have been donated in full, and have made a real difference within the community.

FUNDERS AND SUPPORTERS: The University of Manitoba Faculty of Health Sciences is the main financial contributor. In-Kind Donations have been received from Allco Electrical Ltd, Chapters Polo Park, Charleswood Dental Centre, Chatters, Grace Cafe, Heartland Archery, Platinum Promotions, Shooters, Steinbach Credit Union, University of Manitoba Bookstore Health Sciences, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and the Winnipeg Jets.
