New year, new programs
Prep Studies offering all-new programs in 2017 for young singers
The Desautels Faculty of Music is set to ring in the new year with new programs that promote music education for children, teens and adults.
Prep Studies has three new group classes starting in January.
Whether a student is interested in classical or pop vocals, each of the three new classes offer a place for singers to discover their vocal potential and the joy of singing.
Adventures in Singing is offered for children in grades one through six. Students will learn about healthy vocal production while exploring music that they love to sing. The program offers lessons on breath control, singing posture, musicianship, harmony and performance techniques.
In Pop Vocals, students grade five through 12 will learn vocal training exercises designed to create strong, healthy pop vocals.
In The Singing Musician – University Prep, students in grade 10 and up (including adults) will discover how to build a foundation in practical musicianship and prepare for post-secondary studies in music. Class topics will include healthy vocal technique, sight-singing and solfeggio, rudimentary theory, performance techniques and more.
The programs are taught by Shannon Unger, a graduate of the University of Manitoba (B. Mus.), who has also earned a master of music vocal performance, a doctorate of musical arts, and certifications in contemporary commercial pedagogy as well as vocal physiology studies.
She notes that these programs supplement musical education in the school system.
“This type of programming is essential at a time when funding and time allotments for arts education are diminishing,” says Unger. “The group class format makes exploring singing lessons an affordable option and offers an introduction that we hope will foster a lifelong commitment to music and the arts.”
All students will participate in an end-of-term performance showcase which give them the opportunity to try out and share their new skills.
