Celebrating Ian Park's Retirement at St John's College
St John’s College recently gathered to celebrate a truly momentous milestone: the retirement of Ian Park, Food Services Manager, after 29 years of dedicated service to the College and the University of Manitoba community.
The retirement celebration brought together an extraordinary cross-section of people whose lives Ian has touched over the years. former, current, and retired staff, fellows, alumni, frequent customers who cherished his food, as well as Ian’s family and friends. The strong turnout reflected the deep respect and affection he has earned across generations.
Over nearly three decades, Ian’s leadership transformed the Daily Bread Café and Soup4U into beloved campus destinations, widely recognized for offering some of the best food at the University of Manitoba. Under his care, St John’s kitchens consistently delivered meals that were delicious, nutritious, and culturally diverse, thoughtfully reflecting the wide range of backgrounds and dietary needs within the College community.
The celebration featured heartfelt remarks from several speakers who shared memories of working alongside Ian. Ivan reflected on fond experiences from their years together, while Allison shared messages from former Wardens, including Murdith McLean, who originally hired Ian, as well as Janet Hoskins and Christopher Trott, all of whom served as Wardens during Ian’s time with the College and were present at this celebration.
Beyond the kitchens, Ian also led a significant expansion of St John’s catering operations, establishing the College as a preferred host for campus and community events. This growth strengthened the St John’s brand, expanded community connections, and played a critical role in sustaining the College through the financial challenges of the pandemic.
A Johnian at heart, Ian’s connection to the College runs deep. His family’s ties span generations, with his grandparents, aunties and uncles, and his own children all having been members of the St John’s College community.
In honour of Ian’s extraordinary service and lifelong connection to St John’s College, the College is proud to establish the Ian Park Endowment Fund. The initiative supported by this fund will be guided by Ian’s wishes, ensuring the endowment reflects the same values, care, and commitment he brought to the College community throughout his career.
In countless ways, Ian’s dedication, leadership, and genuine love for St John’s College have nourished not only the bodies of those he served, but the spirit of the community itself. As he enters retirement, the College celebrates his remarkable legacy and extends heartfelt thanks and best wishes to someone who has truly left St John’s better than he found it.
