Previous updates

  • Nov. 16 – University of Manitoba President Michael Benarroch announced today that classes will continue and that the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) has agreed to bring UM’s latest offer to its membership.
“We are thankful that students are able to continue their classes and academic activities,” said Benarroch. “To our faculty, we value and respect you as indispensable collaborators in our shared mission of advanced research and higher education. We are pleased that our community will be able to continue teaching, learning and researching at UM without interruption while the voting process takes place.”
Today’s announcement follows mediation overseen by independent mediator Arne Peltz. We thank Mr. Peltz for his hard work and both negotiating teams for their dedication to the collective bargaining process. UM’s offer is subject to ratification by UMFA members.
To respect the ratification process, the University will not discuss the specifics of the offer at this time except to say that it met the 2020-21 province-issued wage mandate to hold the line on salary increases.
  • Nov. 15 – Mediation between the University of Manitoba (UM) and the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) has been extended and continues Sunday, Nov. 15. Classes will take place on Monday as planned. Please continue to check this story for further updates.
  • Nov. 12 — Today, the University of Manitoba (UM) and the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) entered into mediation as part of efforts to bring the two parties to a mutually acceptable resolution. This process is being overseen by independent mediator Arne Peltz. Mr. Peltz has requested a communications blackout as both sides work together to reach a resolution. As such, we will be limited in what information can be shared with the community. Both UM and UMFA are continuing with mediated discussions. We will continue to share information with you as it becomes available.
  • At the Nov. 5 meeting with UMFA, the UM proposed mediation as the next step in the bargaining process, and UMFA agreed. A mediator is currently being sought to begin mediation next week.
  • On Oct. 30, UM’s President and Vice-Presidents updated the UM community on the status of negotiations with UMFA.
