UM embraces new way of documenting student experiences

New process replaces the former Co-Curricular Record

September 25, 2023 —

UM launched the university’s Experiential Learning and Career Services portal, UM Connect, and the Experience Catalogue last September. This portal allows students to browse through experiential learning and student involvement activities that are taking place in courses (curricular) and outside of the classroom (co-curricular). Currently, there are over 700 experiences, showcased in the Experience Catalogue, and when students participate in these activities, the experience will be captured on their Experience Record.

Students can bolster their education by taking part in experiential learning activities; examples include joining a student group, engaging in community and volunteer work, participating in an international exchange, a faculty competition or other activity. Alongside students’ transcript, the Experience Record can help students keep track of the activities they participate in and the skills and competencies they gain; this helps in strengthening their resumé, articulating skills in job interviews, sharing on LinkedIn, and to further determine their educational journey.

Students are encouraged to learn more about accessing their Experience Record and having experiences recorded within UM Connect

Student group leaders and staff might wonder how the new Experience Record and catalogue are different from the former Co-Curricular Record (CCR). The Career, Community, and Experiential learning Centre (CCELC) has launched a new process to have co-curricular experiences recognized and captured in the Catalogue and Record. In short, the new process is similar in philosophy to the former Co-Curricular Record, but much less complicated. The process will make it easier for experiences to be recorded and allow for a broader scope of experiences to be included. Plus, the Experience Catalogue allows for students (and staff) to browse through the available offerings and more easily take part in these supplemental learning opportunities. We want to capture all the great experiences and skill building of students on campus. If you facilitate an experience you’d like included in the Experience Catalogue, complete this online form to provide details of the experience and positions available.
